I remember a comment by a current parishioner of mine. We were discussing the death of her father and she was also reviewing his faith. She noted that he decided to come to church during WWII. The reason for this was that he noted that the women who were in church and who had sons were serving overseas seas, seemed to be happier than the women who were not in church and who also has sons serving in the war. This was just his observation. But it was a catalyst in his faith journey that would influence subsequent generations.

Thanks, Leslie for sharing your parishioner’s father’s observation. His observation was similar to what was found in another study which found that religious people were better able to cope with shocks. The authors concluded that religion in general, might act as a “buffer” that protects people from life’s disappointments. You can view the discussion of this study at: http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/03/are-religious-p.html.
