Earlier in the week I attended the National Council of Churches Eco-Justice Working Group meeting. At it I learned of an upcoming opportunity through the Reformed Church in America for church leaders who are interested in care for creation. Steve DeYoung, associate for diaconal ministries for the RCA sent the following information about the event, which will take place on May 23-25 at Camp Fowler, in Speculator, NY. Learn more about the event and sign up at Camp Fowler's website.
Why does the Lord make us lie down in green pastures? Leading Churches in Green Pastures is a workshop designed for church leaders interested in creation care ministry. Whether you are exploring care of creation as a new ministry or have been ministering in this area for years. Together, we will explore what the Bible says about the call to be stewards of creation and listen to what the spirit is telling today’s church about this ministry.
The event is sponsored by Camp Fowler, the Reformed Church in America, and the
Regional Synod of Albany, in cooperation with the Episcopal Church. Leaders include: Steven Bouma-Prediger, professor of religion at Hope College, speaking on Rivers and Trees: The Biblical Vision of Shalom; and Michael Schut, economic and environmental affairs officer of the Episcopal Church, speaking on Theology, Economics and Faith: Taking Them off the Shelves and into Our Lives. Additional workshop leaders include: John Paarlberg, Becky Hudak, Ed Smyth, Nancy Ryan, Norm Hamm, Samantha Miller, Kent Busman, Miriam Barnes and David Corlett.
So, if gardening is for you a worshipful experience, recycling feels redemptive or ecology interests you as much as theology, don’t miss this retreat. And if just relaxing and meditating in the beauty of the Adirondacks is what your soul needs, then here is that Sabbath opportunity. You can find out more information and register for Leading Churches in Green Pastures at the Fowler website.
