Léase Juan 1: 1-14

"Y el Verbo se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros". (Juan 1: 14a)

Cuando comemos la cena de Navidad, nuestra familia se reúne alrededor de una gran mesa redonda de roble que ha estado en la familia desde que nuestros padres estaban recién casados.

Una gran variedad de individuos raros se ha reunido alrededor de esta mesa en los últimos años. ¡Nuestra familia estuvo involucrada en el teatro y la música, de modo que esto explica muchas cosas! Pero es el desayuno semanal que organizamos lo que garantiza invitados interesantes. Todos los sábados servimos el desayuno y se abren las puertas de nuestro hogar. Amigos de la iglesia, los amigos del teatro, y los vecinos se mezclan, escuchando música, cantando o jugando juegos. Todo el mundo es bienvenido en la misma mesa–en que todos alternaban y esto era los más valiosos para ellos.

En el nacimiento de Jesús, cuando el Verbo se hizo carne, un extraño grupo de personajes se reunió. Pastores, pobres y espiritualmente sospechosos; los magos, ricos y sabios; José, un carpintero que había accedido a adoptar a este niño; la joven María, dando a luz a un bebé cuyo padre estaba en duda. Por no mencionar los animales del establo. Esta fue la primera experiencia de los "desayunos de sábado por la mañana" del niño, que más tarde incluyó ricos y pobres, recaudadores de impuestos y prostitutas, adúlteros y sacerdotes.

Eso es lo que la iglesia es, un cúmulo de personajes atraídos por Jesús para ser la comunidad de fieles. Él vino a morar entre todos nosotros.

Scripture - John 1: 1–14

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14a)

When we eat our Christmas meal, our family will gather around a big, round oak table that has been in the family since our parents were first married.

A variety of weird characters has sat around this table over the years. Our family was involved in the theater and in music—so that explains a lot! But it was the weekly breakfasts that our folks hosted that ensured interesting guests. Every Saturday they put out breakfast food and opened the doors. Church friends, theater friends, and neighbors mingled, listening to records, singing, or playing games. Everybody was welcome around the same table—we all rubbed elbows and were the richer for it.

At the birth of Jesus—when the Word became flesh—a strange group of characters gathered. Poor and morally suspect shepherds; wealthy and wise magi; Joseph, a carpenter who had agreed to adopt this child; young Mary, giving birth to a baby whose father was in question. Not to mention the animals. This was the first of the child’s own “Saturday morning breakfasts,” which later included rich and poor, tax collector and prostitute, adulterer and priest.

That’s what church is—a bunch of characters drawn by Jesus to be community. He came to dwell among us all.

Prayer
Dear God-with-us, help your church today be a place where people who are welcome nowhere else feel at home. Help us to bring our entire selves—body and soul—to the Christ child, our Host. Amen.

Un niño está por llegar.
¿Sabemos la maravilla de esas palabras?
En medio de nuestro desierto, un niño esta por llegar,

En sus ojos podemos ver la maravilla de su amor.
Por casi dos mil años, hemos vuelto a esta promesa,
Señor, y en el mensaje que Juan el bautista proclamo.
Preparad el camino.
Prepárense para oír cantar a los ángeles. No tengas miedo.
En nuestro mundo de conflictos y guerras,

Léase Jeremías 31:10-14

Mi familia llama el día de hoy "Víspera de la víspera de Navidad". Estamos tentadoramente cerca de la celebración. Hemos sentido la inminente llegada. ¡Estamos que reventamos por buscar una montaña en la cual gritarlo a los vientos!

Pero no está aquí todavía. Todavía es Adviento. Estamos en un lugar diferente de donde estaremos en breve. Todavía estamos invitando a Emmanuel a llegar. Este lugar; el filo, la cúspide, el borde–es un lugar familiar para los pacificadores.

Vemos claramente la posibilidad de un mundo lleno de justicia, en el que el pueblo de Dios "nunca más se consumen" (v. 12), donde Dios, a su vez, cambia su "lamento en gozo" (v. 13). Olemos la redención.

Pero no está aquí todavía. El mundo todavía está lleno de personas que se consumen por el duelo y el luto, experimentando la injusticia. Estamos en un lugar diferente de donde esperamos estar. Estamos luchando con obstáculos y complejidades y sintiendo miedo en las sombras.
No es la Navidad todavía. Pero si en el medio de la preparación te encuentras tarareando una canción de esa sección siguiente del himnario, no voy a decírselo a nadie. Si la previsión de la alegría por venir se apodera de ti y brota una lágrima en tu ojo o una sonrisa en tu cara, discúlpate a ti mismo.

Después de todo, tú sabes cómo termina la historia.

La reunión que Jeremías describe no se ha realizado aun. Pero si en medio del trabajo como pacificadores, un salmo de alabanza rebasa tus labios, no voy a contárselo a nadie. Si la anticipación te atrapa, discúlpate a ti mismo.

Advent devotion - December 23, 2009

Scripture - Jeremiah 31:10–14

My family calls today “Christmas Eve Eve.” We’re tantalizingly close to the celebration. We sense the imminent arrival. We’re bursting to go find a mountain on which to tell it!

But it’s not here yet. It’s still Advent. We’re in a different place from where we’ll be shortly. We’re still inviting Emmanuel to come.

This place—edge, cusp, border—is familiar to peacemakers.

We see clearly the possibility of a world teeming with justice, where God’s people “never languish again” (v. 12), where God will turn “mourning into joy” (v. 13). We smell redemption.

But it’s not here yet. The world is still filled with people who are languishing, mourning, and experiencing injustice. We’re in a different place from where we hope to be. We’re struggling with stumbling blocks and complexities and finding fear in the shadows.

It’s not Christmas yet. But if in the midst of preparing you find yourself humming a tune from that next section of the hymnal, I won’t tell anyone. If the anticipation of the joy to come catches you and puts a tear in your eye or a smile on your face, forgive yourself.

After all, you know how the story ends.

The gathering Jeremiah describes isn’t realized yet. But if in the midst of peacemaking work a psalm of praise crosses your lips, I won’t tell. If the anticipation catches you, forgive yourself.

God of Redemption, we thank you for your bounty in providence, in strength, and in the grace of the coming Prince of Peace. Amen.

Léase Salmo 146

Y hace justicia a los oprimidos, Yahweh da alimento a los hambrientos. (Salmo 146: 7)

Las palabras del salmista anticipar la proclamación de Jesús. Nosotros conocemos que Jesús es el Mesías, porque él personifica estas palabras que nos dicen quién es Dios. Dios es el que nos ama sin límites, que pone en libertad a los prisioneros, abre los ojos de los ciegos, alimenta a los hambrientos, y vela por los forasteros, las viudas y los huérfanos. Dichosos nosotros, cuando ponemos nuestra confianza en este Dios, cuando nos encontramos alegría en la justicia y compasión por nuestros vecinos.

Yo vivo en una comunidad, como muchas otras, que ha experimentado un alto índice de desempleo durante más de un año. La evidencia de la recesión está por todas partes. Nuestro barrio ha resentido los signos de ejecuciones hipotecarias y un aumento en el abandono de casas. Es fácil de responder en el desasosiego a poner nuestra confianza en un nuevo sistema de seguridad y en el crecimiento de nuestra cuenta de ahorros. Pero la seguridad no es lo mismo que la felicidad. La felicidad viene en la conexión con nuestros vecinos, la construcción de la comunidad en vez de construir muros que nos separen y nos aíslen de las personas necesitadas, y trabajar por la justicia, el ser la presencia viva del que vino a liberarnos.

ORACIÓN

Dios de la justicia, te damos gracias por tu inmenso amor. Fortalécenos con Tu Espíritu, para perseguir la justicia, para alimentar a los hambrientos, para conciliar, para curar, para construir comunidad, a descubrir la alegría de vivir como discípulos de Tu Hijo, Jesús. Amen.

Advent devotion - December 22, 2009

Scripture - Psalm 146

Happy is [the one] who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. (Psalm 146:7)

The words of the psalmist anticipate the proclamation of Jesus. We will know Jesus is the Messiah because he embodies these same words that tell us who God is. God is the One who loves us without limit, who sets prisoners free, opens the eyes of the blind, feeds the hungry, and watches over sojourners, widows, and orphans. Happy are we when we put our trust in this God, when we find joy in the same justice and compassion for our neighbors.

I live in a community, like many others, that has experienced high unemployment for more than a year. The evidence of recession is all around us. Our neighborhood has seen foreclosure signs and a rise in home break-ins. It is easy to respond in fear—to put our trust in a new security system and in growing our savings account.

But security is not the same as happiness. Happiness comes in connecting with our neighbors, building community instead of building walls that cut us off and isolate us from those in need, and working for justice—in being the living presence of the one who came to set us free.

Prayer
God of righteousness, we give thanks for your boundless love. Empower us by your Spirit to seek justice, to feed the hungry, to reconcile, to heal, to build community, to discover joy in living as disciples of your Son, Jesus.

Advent devotion - December 21, 2009

Scripture - Luke 1:39–56

It is a challenge to live richly into the anticipation that is Advent—to keep the frenzy and the Christmas rush at bay. Yesterday we celebrated the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The Christmas Eve service is only three days away. Can we offer, will we find, a bit of peace in these days before Christmas? All my best practices and Advent rituals are flung aside as I fuss over the Christmas Eve bulletin, worry that rain will douse the candles outside our church, and wonder if this year’s baby Jesus will cry like a real child.

Then I encounter Mary’s song of praise. Mary has just heard from the angel Gabriel, and she rushes to see her aunt Elizabeth. In that meeting, Mary knows in her whole heart that what the angel said was true. She claims the angel’s story as her own. Mary doesn’t panic; she doesn’t worry about what this means for the future. No, she breaks out into joyous song: “My soul magnifies the Lord and my Spirit rejoices in God my Savior. For God has looked with favor on the lowliness of God’s servant.”

Our sisters and brothers who are Episcopalian include the “Magnificat” in every Advent service. What if we did the same? Would we begin to think of ourselves as people who magnify the Lord, to believe and act as though our actions can make the reality of God more visible for others? During these last few days before Christmas, I invite you to enter into Mary’s song and daily read, hum, or sing Luke 1:46–56.

May we rejoice in the Lord this and every day. Amen.

No es de extrañar que Jesús llegó a ser algo así como un revolucionario. Escucha la canción que aprendió en las rodillas de su madre: "Mi alma engrandece al Señor, se alegra mi espíritu en Dios mi Salvador... que dispersa a los soberbios y abatió a los poderosos. Enaltece a los humildes. Colmó el hambriento con las cosas buenas. Y los ricos los arroja al vacío"(Lucas 1:46-47, 51-53). María "Magníficat" es un antiguo himno de protesta, me gusta pensar en él como la “canción de cuna de la mamá radical”, de contrabando a través de los siglos desde Hannah (1 Sam 2: 1-10) a la madre de Jesús. Es un himno de la esperanza profética, anunciando que la tan esperada liberación de los pobres, los oprimidos y los que padecen hambre se encuentra por fin a la mano.

Cada temporada de Adviento, con María y Hannah antes que ella, retomamos este gran estribillo, dando gracias de que el Dios de la justicia, la compasión y el amor ha venido a habitar entre nosotros en Jesucristo. Divulgamos nuestras oraciones por la paz al Dios que está dando a luz a una gloriosa nueva creación, donde los pobres son satisfechos, los cautivos son liberados, los humildes son exaltados, y hay vida en abundancia para todos. En esta temporada de anhelo y espera, tal vez el más valioso y duradero regalo que podemos dar a nuestros hijos es enseñarles canciones radicales de esperanza, justicia y paz, la antigua promesa de Dios, incluso ahora que nace de nuevo.

ORACIÓN

Dios santo, misericordioso y poderoso, danos la fuerza del amor, el valor de la ternura y el poder de la paz, de modo que podemos unirnos a toda la creación en Tu antigua canción de la vida eterna; por Jesucristo nuestro Salvador. Amén.

Advent devotion - December 20, 2009

Scripture - Luke 1:46–55

It’s no wonder Jesus grew up to be something of a revolutionary. Listen to the song he learned at his mother’s knee: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior . . . [who] has scattered the proud and brought down the powerful. Lifted up the lowly. Filled the hungry with good things. And sent the rich away empty” (Luke 1:46–47, 51–53). Mary’s “Magnificat” is an ancient protest anthem; I like to think of it as the “radical mama’s lullaby,” smuggled down through the centuries from Hannah (1 Sam. 2:1–10) to the mother of Jesus. It is a hymn of prophetic hope, announcing that the long-awaited deliverance of the poor, the oppressed, and the hungry is at last at hand.

Each Advent season, with Mary and Hannah before her, we reprise this great refrain, giving thanks that the God of justice, compassion, and love has come to dwell among us in Jesus Christ. We pour out our prayers for peace to the very God who is giving birth to a glorious new creation—where the poor are satisfied, the captives are liberated, the humble are exalted, and there is life in abundance for all. In this season of longing and waiting, perhaps the most valuable and lasting gift that we can give our children is to teach them songs of radical hope, justice, and peace—God’s ancient promise, even now being born anew.

Prayer
Holy God, merciful and mighty, give us the strength of love, the courage of tenderness, and the power of peace, so that we may join the whole creation in your ancient song of endless life; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
