Buying local food has many benefits, especially supporting small local farms, but buying locally is not an effective way of reducing pollution or carbon footprint. According the May/June issue of WorldWatch, 83% of greenhouse gas emisssions happen before food leaves the farm (http://www.worldwatch.org/node/6064). We need to adopt a broader measure of food's environmental impact than distance traveled can provide.
