As I begin this post, it is seven o'clock a.m. on Sunday morning in the Philippines. The day before the election has dawned. Across the country, people will give thanks and raise their hopes and express their fears in prayer.
When election day dawns on Monday, the churches of the Philippines will respond with prayer and bells. Individuals and communities will pray.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer, in an online article, tells of a Mass that will be celebrated in the Manila Cathedral.
The article reports that churches will toll their bells as a signal for the opening of voting. It identifies additional hopes and concerns of the churches as well as ways in which the churches are involved in the election.
People around the world are watching the election (at least 87 international election observers are in the country) and holding the people of the Philippines in prayer. Here are some resources to join them:
An affirmation and benediction by Ms. Norma Dollaga, Head of Secretariat, People's International Observers Mission
A song by Rebecca Lawson, mission co-worker of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
A prayer from the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program
For the record, I am getting this time difference figured out, but I did check to make sure.
