Violence was reported during the election in the Philippines. Perhaps not as much as in previous elections. Perhaps not as much as had been feared. But violence was reported.
One reported incident was a two-hour gunfight erupted as polling places opened in Tugaya, Lanao del Sur in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. One young woman was killed and two others wounded. People's International Observers Mission delegates, including three foreign observers from Canada, United States of America and Australia witnessed the gunfire along with Kodao Productions' reporter Raymund Villanueva and other Filipino members of the mission. The Rev. Dr. Joyce Mercer, a Presbyterian minister who teaches at Virginia Theological Seminary, was one of the PIOM delegates present in Tugaya.
