A week of speaking out about violence against women | United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, on 25 November, serves as a reminder of the pandemic proportions of this problem and the terrible consequences for individual health and well-being, as well as social and economic development .
November 25 also marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. The dates November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) through December 10 (Human Rights Day) are chosen to link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates including November 29, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, December 1, World AIDS Day, and December 6, which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.
It is very important to speak out about violence against women. But, although it happens less often. We need to remember that women also commit violence against men. My grandson was arrested after being run over by a woman. Charges were dropped. He spent time in Jail after violence by another woman. He is on the Sex Offenter Registry because of violence by another woman. He is divorced because of violence against him by his wife.
He is now engaged to a woman who suffered violence by at least three different men. Violence can go both ways and we need to be sure that in protecting women, we are not supporting women's violence against men.
